The Weston Department of Public Works continued to fulfill its mission to construct and maintain the physical infrastructure that provides for the public's health and safety, to protect the environment, and to enhance the quality of life and ensure that Weston continues to be a desirable place in which to live and conduct business. The following is the weekly report, by division:

 
road work

Administration/Engineering Division


Paving and Roadwork

Ongoing
  • DPW continues to work on obtaining necessary easements on Newton Street before roadway work can be planned;
  • Drainage design work on Newton St. is nearing completion with anticipated construction for summer

Calendar Year 2018 Anticipated Roadway Reconstructions
  • Fairview Road and Montvale Road intersection, Winter Street (Route 30 to Brown Street), Juniper Road, Aspen Road, Glen Road (Wellesley Street to Oak Street), and Highland Street (Pine Street to Route 30) assuming all gas work, water work, and drainage work is completed; 
  • DPW anticipates Gail Road, Pembroke Road, Webster Road, and Arrowhead Road will occur if the gas work (National Grid) can get completed this year; 
Completed
  • Summer Street – final paving completed May 15th - cleanup and loaming and seeding to occur over the next couple weeks;
  • Conant Road (Church Street to approximately old rail road crossing) – final paving completed May 17th - cleanup and loaming and seeding to occur over the next couple weeks;  
  • Perry Lane – final paving completed May 17th - cleanup and loaming and seeding to occur over the next couple weeks
  • Sutton Place – final paving completed May 17th - cleanup and loaming and seeding to occur over the next couple weeks


State/Utility Project Work

Ongoing
  • Route 30 (South Avenue) and Wellesley Street Signal Improvement Project - final landscaping and final cleanup ongoing.  MassDOT and its contractor are non-committal with schedule to complete;
  • National Grid’s gas relay projects - Church Street at/about Pigeon Hill Road (project currently on hold)
  • Continuing to coordinate with Eversource on a number of outstanding issues in Town including double poles, poles guyed into trees, leaning poles and pole guyed with rope (Merriam Street), hazard trees at/near power lines, etc.
  • National Grid's Gas Relay Projects (carry over from 2017):
    • Wellesley Street including Bass Pond Road (Rockport Road to town line) – National Grid will final trench pave at the end of May/beginning of June 2018;  
    • Conant Road / Colchester Road – National Grid will final trench pave at the end of May/beginning of June 2018;   
    • Glen Road (Shady Hill Road to Cliff Road intersection plus or minus) gas main and service replacement ongoing
National Grid’s Gas Relay Projects - proposed for construction 2018 - 
  • Glen Road (Shady Hill Road to Oak Street), Sherburn Circle, continuation of Wellesley Street (699-654), Newton Street, and Concord Road (1-81)
  • Walk-through with National Grid scheduled for May 24th for: Gail Road and Pembroke Road

Ongoing Projects

Continuing
  • Black Oak Pump Station Project – Town Engineer  working on easement document.  Town Engineer working with Eversource and property owner to address some/all pole concerns; 
  • Southside Drainage Project - continuing to work with consultant and attempting to secure the necessary easements for Phase 2 of the project.  Once completed, the permitting will be conducted with construction anticipated for spring 2018.  Town Engineer working on securing necessary easements.  Conservation Commission meeting upon receipt of all Phase II easement will be next action item;
Progress Made
  • Cooks Pond Dam and Pump Rehabilitation Project - Contractor coordinating with private property irrigation company to reestablish disturbed irrigation heads.  Anticipate loaming and seeding week of May 14th and final cleanup;
  • Paines Hill Water Tank Improvement Project - work ongoing and framing started

Consultant Work

Ongoing
  • Overseeing consultants’ work on Warren Avenue Sidewalk Project;
  • Overseeing consultant design work for drainage work for construction season 2016 (Newton Street and Merriam Street).  Continue to attempt to secure required easements on Newton Street;  
  • Merriam Street Sidewalk Project - funding needs to be secured (Annual Town Meeting) for the work, culvert replacement and drainage work needs to take place, sidewalk project needs to be coordinated with roadway work;
  • Wireless Meter Reading, meter replacements and meter installation (approximately 1700) - Interviews with vendors that met criteria was held on March 21st.  No change, yet;
  • Concord Road Culvert replacement (which has impacts on the Warren Avenue and Merriam Street culverts) - Decision matrix tabling is being evaluated;
  • Town Center Improvement Project - Preliminary plans received this week as a result of  meeting on April 18th to discuss progress prints.  Plans are currently with our design consultant team and under review

Progress Made
  • Fairview and Montvale roads area drainage work - work is progressing - water quality unit remains, as well as cleanup 

Engineering

  • Water Main Replacements - Columbine and Dean roads - water main replacement continuing;
  • Currently reviewing 9 Stormwater Permits;
  • Currently issued 53 Stormwater permits which also requires construction inspection

Water Division

  • Completed approximately 62 DigSafes;
  • Performed weekly samples (3), monthly water samples at tanks, and station/tank inspections;
  • Conducted 4 final reads;
  • Installed 1 new water meter and turned on service;
  • Hooked up one temporary meter for house service;
  • Oversaw the water main project on Dean and Columbine roads;
  • Continued meter reading;
  • Continued hydrant flushing program;
 
linwood

Park and Cemetery Division

  • 2 cremation interments;
  • Assisted the Transfer Station with push downs on bins with backhoe as necessary;
  • Cleaned and serviced equipment;
  • Loamed and seeded snow plow damage in Linwood and other park and cemetery locations;
  • Cut grass in Linwood Cemetery and other park and cemetery locations;
  • Edged and mulched the flower beds in Linwood Cemetery and other park and cemetery locations;
  • Repaired a broken water pipe in the older section of Linwood Cemetery;
  • Watered new trees in Case Park

Solid Waste and Recycling Division

  • Processed 2, 100-yard solid waste dumpsters totaling 46.95 tons;
  • Picked up municipal office recycling – 1,300 lbs;
  • Picked up Town office and select Town parks solid waste – 1,940 lbs.;
  • Processed 1 cardboard container – 6.24 tons;
  • Processed 1 bulky plastic container – 3.67 tons;
  • Ran 1 shuttle for grass/leaves – 11.38 tons;
  • Ran 1 shuttle for brush /logs – 6.29 tons;
  • Processed 1 metal container – 4 tons;
  • Process 1 container of scrap wood – 5.58 tons;
  • Assisted with the pickup of various donations including clothing, electronics, books and bikes – 3,640 lbs;
  • Assisted with pickup of Weston textiles – 1,040 lbs;
  • Processed 1 rechargeable battery pickup – 60 lbs;
  • Organized and maintained order in swap shed;
  • Cleaned and pumped in the trailer pit as needed;
  • Picked up litter and cleaned up around the site as needed;
  • Mulched all the flower beds around the property

Highway/Stormwater Division

  • Hot patching potholes: various;
  • Brush Pickup:  Baker Hill and Merriam Street near Sunset Road;
  • Traffic signage and maintenance repairs: various;
  • Oversee tree removal contractor:  various;
  • Inspect catch basin inspections:  various with contractor;
  • Street Sweeping:  north section of Town and Town House Road and Town Center;
  • Pickup broken asphalt:  various;
  • Cleaned up Burchard Park from winter operations;
  • Responded to miscellaneous calls for service:  roadside litter and objects in roadway, illegal sign removal;
  • Inspect and/or as necessary all mailbox call locations:  various outstanding locations;
  • Repair catch basin:  fix granite stone behind basin on Conant Road, Cerulean Way;
  • Prep island for grass cutting;
  • Put stones back in place at intersection of Oxbow and Intervale roads;
  • Cleaned and serviced equipment;
  • Hand out notices to all roadways prior to paving:  Summer Street, Perry Lane, Conant Road, and Sutton Place and surrounding roadways;
  • Sweep and blow Summer Street, Perry Lane, Conant Road and Sutton Place prior to final paving;
  • Work with contractor:  Summer Street, Perry Lane, Conant Road, and Sutton Place;
  • Brush Dump cleanup and organization

Vehicle Maintenance Division

  • Performed routine maintenance (fluid services, tires and brakes, exhaust, steering and suspension, exterior trim work and electrical repairs) on 10 school buses, 6 police vehicles, 11 DPW trucks and other equipment, and 1 recreation vehicle;
  • Performed 1 major repair on vehicle with Major/Significant maintenance activity:  H-22 rebuild flail head attachment;
  • Performed 1 repair on sanders/plow: H-23 overhaul snow blower attachment for next season
