October 9 - 14, 2017The Weston Department of Public Works continued to fulfill its mission to construct and maintain the physical infrastructure that provides for the public's health and safety, to protect the environment, and to enhance the quality of life and ensure that Weston continues to be a desirable place in which to live and conduct business. The following is the weekly report, by division:

Administration/Engineering Division Paving and Roadwork
- North Avenue Roadway Resurfacing Work – Additional pavement markings work required at Lexington Street intersection. Final pavement markings work anticipated for October 2017.
- Viles Street – Some of the driveway aprons received final pavement. Need to complete driveway apron work, final landscaping, and cleanup work;
- Locust Street and Merriam Street (Concord Road to Sunset Road) – Both roadways received binder pavement, driveway apron had binder pavement installed. Remaining work includes adjustment of structures, installation of ADA ramps, final pavement installation, final landscaping work, pavement markings (centerline, crosswalk, etc.), and final cleanup;
- Fairview / Montvale and Newton Street drainage design work has begun and must be completed prior to a roadway reconstruction.
- DPW continues to work on drainage designs and necessary easements before roadway work can be planned on Newton Street
State/Utility Project Work- Route 20 Milling and Resurfacing Project – MassDOT's overlay work is completed. Remaining work includes pavement markings, which is anticipated to occur at night and completed by October 20th;
- Route 30 (South Avenue) and Wellesley Street Signal Improvement Project - Sign installations, final landscaping, and final cleanup, including the removal of work trailers, is anticipated to occur over the next several weeks. The signal is fully functional, but the inspection did not take place on Oct. 16th due to conflicts;
- National Grid’s gas relay projects - More to come on anticipated schedules:
- Summer Street - work ongoing with anticipated completion anticipated for October, noting that trench work will be completed as well
- Church Street at/about Pigeon Hill Road - project currently on hold
- Wellesley Street, including Bass Pond Road (Rockport Road to town line) - anticipated to start soon
- Conant Road / Colchester Road - work anticipated to start soon
- Glen Road, Wellesley Street to Cliff Road intersection (plus or minus) - anticipated to start after Wellesley Street

Ongoing Projects- Black Oak Pump Station Project ongoing – Engineering for generator move and final landscaping and screening is underway. Town Engineer will conduct an outreach prior to advertising work is completed;
- Overseeing consultants’ work on Cooks Pond Dam and Pump Rehabilitation Project - Re-advertised bids opened. Engineering evaluating bids;
- Overseeing consultants’ work on the Southside Drainage Project - Attempting to secure the necessary easements for Phase 2 of the project. Once completed, the permitting will be conducted with construction anticipated for spring 2018;
- Paines Hill Water Tank Improvement Project - project is anticipated to be re-advertised in the fall
Consultant Work- Overseeing consultants’ work on several sidewalk design projects – Latest plans available for viewing online.
- Warren Avenue Sidewalk Project - DPW has reached out to impacted abutter of the project from whom an easement is required
- Merriam Street Sidewalk Project - several easement issues remain and the project has gone before the Conservation Commission and Planning Board. Several site walks have taken place
- Ash Street Concept Sidewalk - Overseeing consultants’ work on concept plan. Soliciting quotes from consultant firms for final design and permitting;
- Overseeing consultant’s work on the modification of the Boston Post Road / Wellesley Street intersection study and the Boston Post Road / School Street intersection study. Submitted project for consideration to the state as a TIP project;
- Overseeing consultant design work for drainage work for construction season 2016 (Newton Street, Merriam Street, and Fairview/Montvale Road area). Continue to attempt to secure required easements on Newton Street. Continued to work on design at Fairview and Montvale roads area;
- Overseeing consultant concept / design work for Town Center Project. Preliminary Plans submitted for review and comment. DPW has provided preliminary review comments but are awaiting committee comments, as well. Portion of the design contract for burying utilities being prepared by consultant;
- Overseeing consultant work on setting up RFPs for Wireless Meter Reading;
- Overseeing consultant design and permitting for Concord Road Culvert replacement which has impacts on the Warren Avenue and Merriam Street culverts. Town won a $37,000 grant to review the sizing of the culverts in this area
Engineering- Currently reviewing 6 Stormwater Permits;
- Currently issued 59 Stormwater permits which also requires construction inspection

Water Division- Completed approximately 43 DigSafes;
- Performed weekly samples (3), monthly water samples at tanks, and station/tank inspections;
- Conducted 3 final reads;
- Turned off two water services and removed meters;
- Upgraded one service to a larger meter;
- Inspected one new water service;
- Began to remove summer services;
- Responded to 0 low-pressure calls;
- Responded to 0 dirty water calls

Park and Cemetery Division- 0 cremation interment;
- 1 grave dug with casket interment;
- Constructed the temporary shoring for the mound tomb in Central Cemetery;
- Cut, trimmed and pruned in Linwood Cemetery;
- Cut, trimmed and cleaned at Library, Case Park, South Cemetery, and Wellesley Street Pumping Station;
- Assisted the Transfer Station with push downs on bins with backhoe as necessary;
- Clean and serviced equipment;
- Water new town trees from the watering list

Solid Waste and Recycling Division- Processed 2- 100-yard solid waste dumpsters totaling 41.01 tons;
- Picked up municipal office recycling – 1,400 lbs;
- Picked up Town office and select town park solid waste – 800 lbs.;
- Processed 2 cardboard containers – 11.13 tons;
- Processed 1 glass container – 3.24 tons;
- Processed 1 plastic container – 0 tons;
- Processed 1 newspaper container – 8.58 tons;
- Ran 2 shuttles for grass/leaves – 16.30 tons;
- Ran 2 shuttles for brush /logs – 5.63 tons;
- Processed 1 metal container – 2.70 tons;
- Assisted with the pickup of various donations including clothing, electronics, books and bikes – 1.07 tons;
- Electronics and appliances w/Freon – 0 tons;
- Processed the pickup of CRT electronics – 0 tons;
- Processed 5 cent deposit bottles and cans – 0 lbs;
- Processed 1 rechargeable battery pickup – 0 lbs;
- Processed pickup of medical sharps – 0 lbs;
- Processed 1 pickup of light bulbs – 0 lbs;
- Organized and maintained order in swap shed;
- Organized and reorganized the compost / manure bins and added more bin block;
- Push up piles and organized the Brush Dump in preparation for dump days;
- Pressure-washed the solid waste compactor area;
- Cleaned and pumped in the trailer pit as needed

Highway/Stormwater Division- Roadside mowing: none;
- Hot patching potholes: Irving Street, Old Road, Hilltop Road, Pigeon Hill Road;
- Mowing islands and grass strips: none;
- Small equipment repairs: 16” roadway saws, 18” and 16” chain saws;
- Fallen tree / branch removal from roadways: Ridgeway Road and Chestnut Street;
- Traffic detours and signage and maintenance repairs: Conant at Church, Fairview at Montvale, Ridgeway at MassPike bridge;
- Catch basin / sinkhole repairs: none;
- Prep. catch basins for repairs: none;
- Pave basins of the week: none;
- Check and clear basin/waterways: none;
- Skin overlay/grindings: Old Road at gravel sections;
- Sweeping: bone;
- DPW yard maintenance: prepared liquid deicer storage for season;
- Stockpile in storage area: salt deliveries in preparation for winter’s snow and ice season;
- Loam and seed roadway shoulders: Viles Street;
- Oversee contractor for paving: driveway aprons, binder course on Viles Street, Merriam Street, and Locust Road;
- Oversee tree removal contractor: Concord Road, Sudbury Street, Baker’s Hill Road, Boston Post Road;
- Inspect miscellaneous tree locations for possible action: Conant Road, Hobbs Brook, Buckskin Road, Westerly, and Columbine;
- Guardrail maintenance: Merriam Street at RR bridge parking lot;
- Respond to miscellaneous calls for service: roadside litter on Newton Street and North Avenue, tree branches, and objects in roadway, etc.;
- Assist Cemetery Division with burial

Vehicle Maintenance Division- Performed routine maintenance (fluid services, tires and brakes, exhaust, steering and suspension, exterior trim work and electrical repairs) on 9 school buses, 3 police vehicles, 8 DPW trucks and other equipment, 0 recreation vehicles, and 0 school grounds vehicles;
- Performed 1 major repair on vehicles with Major/Significant maintenance activity: School bus inspections completed;
- Performed 0 repairs on sanders/plows;
- Did NOT assist Highway Division with sanding and/or plowing operations this week
