October 2 - 7, 2017The Weston Department of Public Works continued to fulfill its mission to construct and maintain the physical infrastructure that provides for the public's health and safety, to protect the environment, and to enhance the quality of life and ensure that Weston continues to be a desirable place in which to live and conduct business. The following is the weekly report, by division:

Administration/Engineering Division Paving and Roadwork
- North Avenue Roadway Resurfacing Work – Additional pavement markings work required at Lexington Street intersection. Final pavement markings work expected for October 2017;
- Viles Street – Final pavement installation the week of October 2nd. Driveway aprons anticipated for October 12th and final landscaping work remaining;
- Locust Street and Merriam Street (Concord Road to Sunset Road) – Both roadways were reclaimed this week;
- Fairview / Montvale drainage design work has begun and must be completed prior to a roadway reconstruction;
- DPW continues to work on drainage designs and necessary easements before roadway work can be planned on Newton Street
State/Utility Project Work- Route 20 Milling and Resurfacing Project – MassDOT has been made aware of some puddle issues. MassDOT has set the schedule for the milling and overlay work on Route 20 from School Street to I-95 Interchange. Work ongoing;
- Route 30 (South Avenue) and Wellesley Street Signal Improvement Project - Sign installations, final landscaping, and final cleanup, including the removal of work trailers, to occur over the next several weeks. Signal fully functional and the inspection is scheduled for Oct. 16th;
- National Grid’s gas relay projects on Winter Street (Route 30 to Brown Street) was completed. Summer Street gas main replacement work is ongoing with an anticipated completion for October. National Grid is planning work on Church Street at/about Pigeon Hill Road and Wellesley Street (Rockport Road to town line). National Grid has several other gas main replacements in the design and permitting phase: Glen Road and Conant/Colchester roads

Ongoing Projects- Black Oak Pump Station Project ongoing – Engineering for generator move and final landscaping and screening is underway. Town Engineer will conduct an outreach prior to advertising work is completed;
- Overseeing consultants’ work on Cooks Pond Dam and Pump Rehabilitation Project. Re-advertised bids opened and Engineering is evaluating bids;
- Overseeing consultants’ work on the Southside Drainage Project. Attempting to secure the necessary easements for Phase 2 of the project. Once completed, the permitting will be conducted with construction anticipated for Spring 2018;
- Paines Hill Water Tank Improvement Project - the project is anticipated to be readvertised in the fall
Consultant Work- Overseeing consultants’ work on several sidewalk design projects – Latest plans available for viewing online.
- Warren Avenue Sidewalk Project - DPW has reached out to impacted abutter of the project from whom an easement is required
- Merriam Street Sidewalk Project - several easement issues remain and the project has gone before the Conservation Commission and Planning Board. Several site walks have taken place.
- Ash Street Sidewalk Concept - Overseeing consultants’ work on concept plan. Outreach by Traffic & Sidewalk Committee conducted;
- Overseeing consultant’s work on the modification of the Boston Post Road / Wellesley Street intersection study and the Boston Post Road / School Street intersection study. Submitted project for consideration to the state as a TIP project;
- Overseeing consultant design work for drainage work for construction season 2016 (Newton Street, Merriam Street, and Fairview/Montvale Road area). Continue to attempt to secure required easements on Newton Street. Continued to work on design at Fairview and Montvale roads area;
- Overseeing consultant concept / design work for Town Center Project. Preliminary Plans submitted for review and comment. DPW has provided preliminary review comments but is awaiting committee comments, as well. The portion of the design contract for burying utilities is being prepared by the consultant;
- Overseeing consultant work on setting up RFPs for Wireless Meter Reading;
- Overseeing consultant design and permitting for Concord Road Culvert replacement, which has impacts on the Warren Avenue and Merriam Street culverts. Town won a $37,000 grant to review the sizing of the culvert(s) in this area
Engineering- Currently reviewing 5 Stormwater Permits;
- Currently issued 64 Stormwater permits which also requires construction inspection

Water Division- Completed approximately 35 DigSafes;
- Performed weekly samples (3), monthly water samples at tanks, and station/tank inspections;
- Conducted 0 final reads;
- Inspected 2 new water services;
- Changed out 2 valves before water meters;
- Continued work on water billing;
- Responded to 0 low-pressure calls;
- Responded to 0 dirty water call

Park and Cemetery Division- 0 cremation interments;
- 2 graves dug with casket interment;
- Cut, trimmed and pruned in Linwood Cemetery;
- Assisted the Transfer Station with push downs on bins with backhoe as necessary;
- Cleaned and serviced equipment;
- Watered new town trees from the watering list

Solid Waste and Recycling Division- Processed 1- 100-yard solid waste dumpsters totaling 21.57 tons;
- Picked up municipal office recycling – 420 lbs;
- Picked up Town office and select Town park solid waste – 1,040 lbs.;
- Processed cardboard container – 6.27 tons;
- Processed 1 glass container – 6.03 tons;
- Processed 1 plastic container – 2.32 tons;
- Processed 1 newspaper container – 8.46 tons;
- Ran 1 shuttle for grass/leaves – 8.57 tons;
- Ran 1 shuttle for brush /logs – 4.9 tons;
- Processed 1 metal container – 3.93 tons;
- Assisted with the pickup of various donations including clothing, electronics, books and bikes – 2.28 tons;
- Electronics and appliances w/Freon – 0 tons;
- Processed the pickup of CRT electronics – 0 tons;
- Processed 5 cent deposit bottles and cans – 0 lbs;
- Processed 1 rechargeable battery pickup – 0 lbs;
- Processed pickup of medical sharps – 0 lbs;
- Processed 1 pickup of light bulbs – 980 lbs;
- Organized and maintained order in swap shed;
- Cut and trimmed grass around property;
- Pressure washed the solid waste compactor area;
- Cleaned and pumped in the trailer pit as needed

- Remove DMH casting: Village Road;
- Pave basins of the week: none;
- Oversaw vegetative spraying: none;

- Skin overlay: none;
- Sweeping: Viles Street, Transfer Station, Boston Post Road, Town House Road, Linwood Cemetery, miscellaneous main and secondary roadways in the north, south and middle sections of town;
- DPW yard maintenance: start cleanup and preparation for winter operations;
- Liquid deicer training, maintenance, and usage: in-house all operators;
- Loam and seed roadway shoulders: North Avenue (finish) and Viles Street;
- Oversee contractor for paving: Viles Street;
- Oversee contractor for reclamation of roadways: Locust Road and Merriam Street (Sunset Road to Concord Road);
- Oversee contractor’s calcium application: Locust Road and Merriam Street;
- Inspect miscellaneous tree locations for possible action: 309 Conant Road, Hobbs Brook, Buckskin Road, Westerly, and Columbine;
- Guardrail maintenance: Merriam Street at railroad bridge parking lot;
- Respond to miscellaneous calls for service: roadside litter, low tree branches, objects in roadway, etc.
- Deliver notices of gas main replacements: Conant Road, Woodward, Sears Road, Shady Hill Road, Glen Road, Cliff Road, etc.

Vehicle Maintenance Division- Performed routine maintenance (fluid services, tires and brakes, exhaust, steering and suspension, exterior trim work and electrical repairs) on 5 school buses, 2 police vehicles, 2 DPW trucks and other equipment, 0 recreation vehicles, and 1 school grounds vehicle;
- Performed 0 major repairs on vehicles with Major/Significant maintenance activity;
- Performed 0 repairs on sanders/plows;
- Did NOT assist Highway Division with sanding and/or plowing operations this week
