Bratislava – A Taste of Slovakian Life

Wednesday, February 17, 1:00-2:00 on Zoom

Bratislava may not immediately come to mind as a travel spot – in fact, it’s often an adjunct to visits to nearby Prague or Budapest – but this charming medium-sized city is well-worth a visit of its own. Its location bordering Austria and Hungary makes it the only national capital that borders two countries, only 18 kilometres (11.2 mi) from the Hungaria border and only 60 kilometres (37.3 mi) from that of Austria. The Danube River passes through the city from the west to the southeast. The cityscape of Bratislava is characterized by medieval architecture and grandiose 20th-century structures. We will be visiting Bratislava Castle as well as notable cathedrals and churches, the ultra -modern UFO Tower, and learning about Slovakian cuisine. Our tour guide, Marilyn Harris, worked in education for over 40 years and in her retirement has continued to teach classes on history and travel.

Happy Lunar New Year

40 residents celebrated the Year of the Ox this week with resident Roberta Hing, as she shared a historical presentation, including her family's immigration story. She also provided a cooking demo and participants enjoyed a dumpling tasting form their own homes. The program will be available as a recording in the coming weeks for those who missed the fun.

In the meantime, a group of Weston Chinese Neighbors created a show which aired over the weekend. Enjoy!
