The Weston Fire Department would like to notify residents of a potential safety risk regarding the smoke detectors in their homes. The National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) has recently discovered that certain brands of smoke detectors that are sold online do not comply with applicable building codes in many states and municipalities. Among these brands are X-Sense, Arikon, and Bovon. The NASFM warns that these brands are not tested or approved by several national third-party testing laboratories, such as Underwriter Laboratories (UL) or Intertek/ETL. Smoke alarms sold in the United States are sent to UL or Intertek/ETL for testing and review so they can subject products to the prescribed review process in order to uphold the industry-accepted UL 217, Standard for Smoke Alarms . If your smoke alarm is manufactured by X-sense, Arikon, or Bovon, or you purchased it online and it does not bear the third-party laboratory mark, please remove it from your home immediately and replace it with a properly-tested brand. NASFM is also asking the Consumer Product Safety Commission to further investigate this matter and are urging online retailers to stop selling non-listed products to ensure consumers are protected.
