The Music of the Civil Rights Movement (1940-1070)

Tuesday, June 22, 2021

This program, presented by music historian John Clark, begins with a controversial Marian Anderson concert and shocking songs by Billie Holiday and Oscar Hammerstein, a response to a 1956 racial incident involving Nat King Cole. John will cover the history of 1950s and 60s Civil Rights anthems and songs that were popular near the end of the 60s. The program will conclude with the history of other noteworthy songs by Pete Seeger, Mahalia Jackson, Odetta and Nina Simone as well as fiery proto-rap protest poetry by spoken word artists. Call the COA at 781-786-6280 to register.
