Franco Zeffirelli, the director of Romeo and Juliet and Brother Sun, Sister Moon, offers a heartfelt tale based on his youth in late-1930's Florence, when he was raised by the "Scorpioni," a circle of expatriate British and American women who were drawn to the arts and culture of Italy.
The group is dominated by Maggie Smith the imperious widow of the British ambassador, a woman who is as convinced that Il Duce and his Fascists are benign as she is exasperated by the group's other leader, a brash American socialite played by Cher. With war approaching, the women refuse to leave their beloved Italy, and when the British are interned, it falls to the American women and Zeffirelli's younger self to help them survive betrayal, persecution, and likely death at the hands of the Nazis.
With a renowned cast that includes Judi Densch, Joan Plowright, and Lily Tomlin, Tea with Mussolini is a buoyant love letter to the better angels who rise amidst the worst of times.
